Vild tamarind (Wild tamarind) is a small mimosa-like tree native to southern Mexico and northern Central America. It is fast-growing, with beautiful pinnate green leaves that strongly resemble the well-known sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica), although the leaves of the wild tamarind do not retract when touched. The flowers are white, small, and bushy. The seed pods are classic legumes that dry out and turn brown, containing black seeds.
Wild tamarind was once considered a miracle tree due to its incredibly wide range of uses. As the tree grows rapidly, it was excellent for growing firewood. The seed pods were an important food source for animals (and sometimes humans). The tree has also been used for charcoal production and even in paper manufacturing. This extensive use has resulted in the tree now being found throughout all tropical regions and it is now considered invasive in several places.
In Denmark, however, the tree cannot survive in the wild, and it does very well in large pots.
