While winter still holds on, the small white snowdrops emerge. Often long before the garden has truly awakened, they stand among withered leaves and through cold soil as one of the first signs of the year that spring is on its way.

This fine paper cutout is inspired by the classic snowdrop and can be used as a simple decoration in the transition between winter and spring.

Create your own snowdrops

Cut out the leaves and flowers and assemble the snowdrops exactly as you wish. The individual parts can be shaped carefully so that the flowers gain more volume and a lively expression.

Attach a small string to the finished snowdrops and hang them individually on a branch, in the window, or gather several into a light garland.

They are lovely as decorations from the very first months of the year and can remain hanging while the days grow longer and the real snowdrops begin to emerge outside.

Hand-painted Danish paper cutout

The paper cutout is designed by Tall Hat Tales and has a simple and charming hand-painted expression inspired by one of our most beloved spring flowers.

The white flowers and green leaves make the snowdrops easy to combine with branches and other natural materials, providing a lovely decoration for the time after Christmas when the home becomes a bit brighter and simpler again.

When the snowdrop heralds spring

The snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis, is one of the earliest flowers we encounter in the garden. It can bloom as early as mid-winter and continues into early spring.

Even snow and frost can be withstood by the small plant. The flower hangs protected with its head bowed while it waits for milder days and the first insects of the year.

In Denmark, the snowdrop has taken on another quite special role. For when the first flowers appear, the time for "gækkebreve" (snowdrop letters) approaches.

The Danish tradition of "gækkebreve"

The gækkebrev is a special Danish tradition that can be traced back to the 1800s.

A gækkebrev traditionally consists of a finely cut or decorated piece of paper with a small verse or rhyme. The sender does not write their name, but replaces the letters with dots – one dot for each letter in the name.

The recipient must then try to guess who the letter is from.

If the sender is not guessed before Easter, the recipient traditionally owes an Easter egg. If, however, the name is guessed, it is the sender who must provide an egg.

The snowdrop became part of the tradition and could be placed inside the letter as a small greeting that spring was on its way. It is also from this that the "gækkebrev" (literally "snowdrop letter") gets the name we use today.

A small spring tradition worth preserving

In a time of messages, emails, and quick greetings, there is something special about still cutting a piece of paper, writing a small rhyme, and sending it to someone you care about.

The paper snowdrops can therefore also be used as inspiration for a creative afternoon with gækkebreve. Find paper and scissors, write a small verse, and remember the dots instead of the name.

Perhaps the tradition becomes a little harder to guess when the handwriting no longer reveals the sender.
