  • Latin name: Wasabia japonica (syn: Eutrema japonicum)
  • Danish names: Wasabi
  • English names: Wasabi, Japanese horseradish

Wasabi originates from Japan and parts of Russia, where it grows naturally along streams. It is best known for its contribution to the spicy green paste served with sushi. However, it is only at better restaurants that real wasabi is served. Most often, it is unfortunately just a green-colored paste made from horseradish that is served instead. It is said that you can tell the difference because real wasabi dissolves easily in soy sauce, whereas the "fake" kind clumps and does not really dissolve.

The plant itself is related to horseradish and mustard. It grows via a rhizome, which is also the part used in wasabi paste. The large green leaves grow on thin stems and reach up to 15 cm in length. Unfortunately, it is not particularly easy to grow, which is also why real wasabi is quite expensive. The plants cannot tolerate direct sunlight, they require high humidity, and preferably a temperature between 8 - 20 °C. If you can provide these conditions, it is definitely exciting to try growing it.

Unfortunately, there have been several cases where Chinese companies/individuals in particular have sold fake wasabi seeds. We guarantee the authenticity of our seeds!

We recommend our Ficus soil for wasabi plants and seeds.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a fine layer of sand. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil (preferably mixed with a little sand and orchid bark). Can be placed on a tray with stones and water (or similar) to increase humidity.

- Place in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight
