RARE

  • Latin name: Passiflora sexflora
  • Danish names: Flagermusvinget passionsblomst
  • English names: Batwing passionflower, passion flower

Passiflora sexflora is a rare and exciting species in the vast passion flower genus, which includes hundreds of species from tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. The species is particularly well-known among collectors by the name Batwing Passionflower – in Danish often called the bat-winged passion flower.

The nickname is due to the plant's unusual leaves, which in many plants have a characteristic shape reminiscent of spread bat wings. The combination of the distinct leaves and the fascinating flowers makes this species one of the more unusual passion flowers in cultivation.

The species is rarely seen in cultivation compared to more well-known species such as Passiflora edulis, Passiflora caerulea, and Passiflora ligularis, making it particularly attractive to collectors of rare Passiflora species.

The plant develops long, vining tendrils and beautiful green leaves, giving it a lush and tropical look. Like other passion flowers, it forms spectacular flowers with a complex structure that makes the genus one of the most fascinating in the plant kingdom.

Passion flowers are known for their incredible variation in both flower shapes, leaf shapes, and growth habits. Many species are grown for their flowers, while others are also valued for their edible fruits.

Cultivation and requirements

Passiflora sexflora thrives best in full sun to light partial shade and prefers:

  • Nutrient-rich and well-drained soil
  • Even moisture during the growing season
  • High humidity
  • Support for climbing

A nutrient-rich tropical potting soil is ideal for cultivation. For optimal growth, an organic fertilizer can be used throughout the growing season.

The species is not frost-tolerant and in Denmark is best grown as a container plant, greenhouse plant, or winter garden plant. It can be placed outdoors during the summer months in a warm and protected location.

Like most passion flowers, the plant grows quickly under good conditions and can develop long vines in a short time.

Cultivation from seeds

Seeds of Passiflora sexflora germinate best under warm conditions.

  • Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before sowing (but see our article on germinating passion flower seeds)
  • Sow in a well-drained soil mix
  • Maintain a temperature of 22–28 °C
  • Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet

Germination can occur within a few weeks, but it can often take months for them to sprout. Patience is therefore often necessary when growing rare Passiflora species.

The young plants usually grow quickly once established.

Utility and collector value

Passiflora sexflora is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector plant. It is especially the species' rarity, the unusual bat-like leaves, and the characteristic flowers that make it interesting among enthusiasts.

For passion flower collectors, the species represents an opportunity to grow something rarely seen in common plant collections.

Passion flowers are among the most varied flowering plants in the world, and Passiflora sexflora is an exciting example of the enormous diversity found within the genus.

Passiflora sexflora is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow a rare and exotic passion flower from seed – a fascinating climbing plant with unusual leaves, beautiful flowers, and high collector value.

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24–48 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Keep in a bright and warm location.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can optionally try to speed up the process by carefully sanding the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.

Childcare

Plant in a pot that can be moved in and out depending on the weather.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably with some sun
- Prefers shelter from the wind
- Use nutrient-rich, well-draining soil
- Keep moist but not soggy
- Fertilize during the growing season
- NOT frost-tolerant
