  • Latin name: Gyna lurida
  • Danish name: Porcelain cockroach
  • English name: Porcelain cockroach

  • Variant: Yellow

Gyna lurida, in its special yellow color variant, is a fascinating cockroach that originates from the tropical forests of Africa. This variant, known as "Yellow," has a brilliant yellow color that makes it one of the most attractive cockroaches in the hobby. With a light body structure and the ability to climb and move lively, it is a very active cockroach. The males of this species can also fly short distances.

Our yellow Gyna lurida cockroaches are from a very nice group, with plenty of yellow color.

Care guide for Gyna lurida "yellow":

Terrarium:

Size: A terrarium of at least 30 liters is suitable for a small group of cockroaches. This species prefers a slightly higher terrarium than usual, so it can climb and fly a bit. See our article on terrariums for insects.

Substrate: Use a mixture of coconut fiber, peat, or another moisture-retaining substrate. We use our own specialized soil for terrariums with all our cockroaches. A layer of approx. 5 cm is ideal, as it allows the cockroaches to burrow. Our insect food mix can advantageously be placed on top of the substrate.

Decor: Add pieces of bark, leaves, and branches so the cockroaches can hide, as they prefer dark and sheltered areas. Preferably use slightly long branches that reach the top of the terrarium, as the species likes to climb and fly.

Temperature and Humidity:

Temperature: Keep the terrarium between 24-28°C during the day.

Humidity: The humidity should be kept high, around 60-80%. This can be achieved by spraying the terrarium lightly with water a few times a week.

Feeding:

Feeding: Gyna lurida "yellow" is more or less omnivorous but is very fond of fruit like apples and pears. They also thrive well on vegetables like carrots, apples, and potatoes, as well as dry food like fish food or dog kibble. Ensure the vegetables are organic! Remember calcium and minerals.

Water: Ensure fresh water is always available. Use a shallow dish to avoid drowning accidents. You can also line a corner of the terrarium with damp sphagnum moss, which you ensure is always kept moist.

Cleaning and Maintenance:

Remove any undigested food scraps regularly to avoid mold and unwanted odors.

Add bioactive animals that help keep the terrarium clean. See our article on the bioactive terrarium.

With proper care, Gyna lurida "Yellow" can live for up to 1-2 years in captivity and continuously produce young. Their beautiful yellow color and lively behavior make them a unique and fascinating pet for any terrarium. The yellow color is best maintained by continuously sorting out the least colorful adult individuals.
