VERY RARE!

  • Latin name: Passiflora hyacinthiflora
  • Danish names: Hyacintblomstret passionsblomst
  • English names: Hyacinth passionflower, passion flower

Passiflora hyacinthiflora is a rare and highly decorative passionflower from Colombia. The species belongs to the Decaloba group, which includes many of the more botanically unique passionflowers with distinctive foliage, smaller flowers, and significant collector value.

The name hyacinthiflora refers to the shape of the flowers, which can resemble small hyacinth blooms. The flowers are often described as vivid pink-purple to almost neon in color, giving the plant an unusual and highly eye-catching appearance. Its twining growth and decorative leaves make the species exciting even before it blooms.

The species is associated with cooler, humid forest environments and cloud forest conditions, which differentiates it from many of the more heat-loving passionflowers. It is therefore particularly suitable for growers who can provide light, humidity, and moderate temperatures rather than extreme heat.

If you are interested in passionflowers, you can also explore the rest of our collection of Passiflora seeds, where you will find rare collector species, highland species, and more well-known fruit-bearing varieties.

Cultivation and requirements

Passiflora hyacinthiflora thrives best in bright, filtered light to light semi-shade and prefers:

  • Nutrient-rich and well-drained soil
  • Even moisture during the growing season
  • High humidity
  • Support for climbing
  • Moderate temperatures without extreme heat

A nutrient-rich tropical potting soil with good drainage is suitable. During the growing season, a mild, organic fertilizer can be used to support healthy growth and flowering.

The species is not fully hardy in Denmark and is best grown as a container plant, greenhouse plant, or conservatory plant. It should be overwintered in a bright, frost-free location. Since it originates from cooler subtropical conditions, it can often thrive better at moderate temperatures than in very hot and stagnant greenhouse conditions.

Growing from seed

Seeds of Passiflora hyacinthiflora germinate best under warm, humid, and stable conditions. See our article on germinating passionflower seeds.

  • Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before sowing
  • Sow in a well-drained and moisture-retaining soil mix
  • Maintain a temperature around 20–25 °C
  • Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet
  • Provide a bright location without drying out

Germination can occur within a few weeks, but some seeds may take longer to sprout. As with many rare Passiflora species, growing from seed requires patience and stable conditions.

The young plants quickly develop a twining habit once established and should be provided with support early on.

Utility and collector value

Passiflora hyacinthiflora is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's plant. It is particularly interesting due to its rarity, its Colombian origin, and its unusually colorful flowers.

For passionflower collectors, the species is an exciting addition to both classic fruit-bearing Passiflora and more unique species such as Passiflora sexflora and Passiflora andreana. It shows another side of the genus with its more delicate, botanical, and cloud forest-like expression.

Passiflora hyacinthiflora is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow a rare and colorful passionflower from seed – an elegant climbing plant with high collector value and a very special look.

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24–48 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Keep in a bright and warm place.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can try to speed up the process by carefully sanding the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.

Childcare

Plant in a pot that can be moved in and out depending on the weather.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably in some sun
- Prefers shelter from the wind
