  • Latin name: Panchlora nivea
  • Danish name: Banana cockroach, green banana cockroach
  • English name: Cuban cockroach, green banana cockroach

Panchlora nivea, commonly known as the "Banana cockroach," is a small, emerald-green cockroach native to the humid forest regions of Central and South America. With its bright green color, reminiscent of banana leaves, it is one of the most colorful cockroaches in the hobby, making it a beautiful and exciting addition to any terrarium. Furthermore, it is a highly favored feeder insect for many reptiles such as anoles, chameleons, and geckos.

The banana cockroach is known for being a fast and active species that loves to crawl around and explore its environment. It is also capable of flying short distances, which makes it exciting to observe. This species is suitable for both beginners and experienced terrarium keepers who want a lively and beautiful cockroach for their collection.

Care guide for Panchlora nivea:

Terrarium:

Size: A terrarium of at least 20 liters is appropriate for a small group of cockroaches. This species prefers a slightly taller terrarium than normal, so it can climb and fly a bit. See our article on terrariums for insects.

Substrate: Use a mixture of coconut fiber, peat, or other moisture-retaining substrate. We use our own special soil for terrariums for all our cockroaches. A layer of approx. 5 cm is ideal, as it allows the cockroaches to burrow. Our insect food mix can advantageously be placed on top of the substrate.

Decor: Add bark pieces, leaves, and branches so the cockroaches can hide, as they prefer dark and sheltered areas. Preferably use some long branches that reach the top of the terrarium, as the species likes to climb and fly.

Temperature and Humidity:

Temperature: Keep the terrarium between 24-28°C during the day, and it can drop to around 22°C at night.

Humidity: Humidity should be kept high, around 60-80%. This can be achieved by misting the terrarium lightly with water a few times a week.

Food:

Feeding: Panchlora nivea is more or less omnivorous but is very fond of fruit. They thrive well on vegetables such as carrots, apples, and potatoes, as well as dry food like fish food or dog kibble. Ensure the vegetables are organic! Remember calcium and minerals.

Water: Ensure fresh water is always available. Use a shallow dish to avoid drowning accidents. You can also line a corner of the terrarium with moist sphagnum moss, which you ensure is always kept moist.

Cleaning and Maintenance:

Remove any undigested food residue regularly to avoid mold and unwanted odors.

Add bioactive creatures to help keep the terrarium clean. See our article on the bioactive terrarium.

With proper care, Panchlora nivea can live for up to 1-2 years in captivity. This fast and active species brings life and color to the terrarium, and its emerald-green appearance makes it a truly exciting terrarium pet. If you are looking for a tropical cockroach with lively behavior and an exotic look, the Banana cockroach is an ideal choice!
