RARE
- Latin name: Therea regularis
- Danish name: Orange domino cockroach
- English name: Orange domino roach
Therea regularis, also known as the "Orange Domino Roach," originates from the dry and subtropical forests of India. This beautiful and rare cockroach is known for its characteristic orange-red spots on a black background, which resemble a domino tile. It is closely related to Therea bernhardti, but differs in its unique colors and slightly smaller size.
The orange domino roach is known for its calm and slow behavior, and like its relatives, it cannot climb smooth surfaces and is diurnal, which makes it easy to keep in a terrarium. This is an ideal species for those who want a calm, beautiful, and exotic pet.
Care guide for Therea regularis:
Terrarium:
Size: A terrarium of at least 20 liters is appropriate for a small group of cockroaches. See our article on terrariums for insects if needed.
Substrate: Use a mixture of coconut fiber, peat, or other moisture-retaining substrate. We use our own specialized terrarium soil for all our cockroaches. A layer of approx. 5 cm is ideal, as it allows the cockroaches to burrow. Our insect food mixture can be placed on top of the substrate to advantage.
Furnishings: Add pieces of bark, leaves, and branches so the cockroaches can hide, as they prefer dark and sheltered areas.
Temperature and Humidity:
Temperature: Keep the terrarium between 24-28°C during the day; it may drop to around 20°C at night.
Humidity: Needs to be kept slightly drier than its relatives. Therefore, only spray the terrarium once a week.
Food:
Feeding: Therea regularis is more or less omnivorous. They thrive well with vegetables like carrots, apples, and potatoes, as well as dry food such as fish flakes or dog pellets. Make sure the vegetables are organic! Remember calcium and minerals.
Water: Ensure fresh water is always available. Use a shallow dish to avoid drowning accidents. You can also line a corner of the terrarium with moist sphagnum moss, which you ensure is kept moist at all times.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
Remove any uneaten food scraps regularly to avoid mold and unpleasant odors.
Add bioactive organisms that help keep the terrarium clean. See our article on the bioactive terrarium here.
With the right care, Therea regularis can live for up to 1-2 years in captivity, and they are a pleasure to observe in their daily activities. With good care, it will also continuously breed and produce offspring.
