Latin name: Ceratophysella ella "yellow"
- Danish name: Gule springhaler
- English name: Springtails, collembola, yellow springtails
Ceratophysella ella is a yellow springtail with a beautiful, lemon-yellow color, which makes it easy to identify and a bit more fun to keep than the classic white springtails (Folsomia candida). The species is not yet very widespread in hobby circles, but is slowly gaining popularity – especially in circles focusing on bioactive setups, where aesthetics and functionality often go hand in hand.
This species is slightly smaller than the large red (e.g., Bilobella braunerae) and blue springtails, but somewhat more eye-catching than the colorless types. It jumps actively around, as is known from other springtails, and it reproduces quickly under good conditions.
Care is similar to what is known from other springtails: they thrive best in moist substrate with plenty of organic matter. Dead plant material such as withered leaves, pieces of bark, and small amounts of yeast or dry yeast are excellent food sources. It is important that the substrate is kept moist, but not wet – and preferably without too large fluctuations in humidity.
– It is a good and decorative species for bioactive terrariums, where it acts as both a cleanup crew and a visual bonus
You can also easily keep Ceratophysella ella as a separate culture – e.g., in boxes with coconut humus, activated carbon, or sphagnum. We have had good experiences ourselves keeping them in terrarium soil. The species is generally easy to care for and reproduces quickly if conditions are stable and moist.
Feed with fish flakes and dry yeast.
Note: The yellow springtails "hide" a bit more than the normal springtails. They will often be found under pieces of bark or down in the substrate. In the evening, they come out more, especially if fed.
